- Course objectives
- The project focuses on the relationship between collective memory and transformation of urban space in the post-communist period. It examines the ways in which representations of the past affect recent urban reconstructions, yet it also looks at how urban development and urban planning alone intervene in the collective memory process and affect articulations of the relationship to a collective past. It focuses on three cities Brno, Berlin and Budapest yet it retains the ambition to produce a more general account of the investigated processes and their outcomes. It takes advantage of the expertise of an international research team, which makes it possible to combine a detailed analysis of decision making processes with the analytical perspective of cultural sociology. The explanatory power of the project is further enhanced by the comparative perspective of analysis which makes it possible to asses the impact of specific political, legal, economic, historical, social and cultural factors on the post-communist urban transformations in the context of collective memory struggles.
