Course objectives
Course is a follow-up of "Human physiology" and focuses on structure and functioning of central and peripheral nervous system. At the end of the course students should be able to explain neurophysiological mechanisms of perception, information processing, movement, memory and learning, behaviour, motivational systems, emotions and feelings. Student will understand that defense behaviour and stress response are important factors in aetiology of psychosomatic diseases. The knowledge student can utilize later during studies of clinical psychology and psychotherapy.
Syllabus
  • 1) Brain and behavior, environment of the neuron. Synapse.
  • 2) Information processing in the nervous system.
  • 3) Physiology of sensory organs. Somatosensory system.
  • 4) Motor system. Autonomic system.
  • 5) Learning and memory. Language. Functional asymmetry of the hemispheres
  • 6) Arousal mechanisms, sleep. Modulatory systems of the brain. Limbic forebrain and motivation.
  • 7) Implicit and explicit emotion processes.

Assessment methods
Fundamental Neuroscience course is terminated by a written test: the students write answers to 3 questions within one hour. Every question will be graded A-F. To pass the exam, student must obtain at least grade E in each evaluated question. In the last part of the test student is required to draw selected anatomical structures into schemas of the brain.
