Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the U.S. energy security, as a major actor in the global energy markets. There will be a block of lectures thought by James Coan (James A. Baker III. Institute for Public Policy, Rice University, Texas) hold from November 7 till November 10 (students´ participation is obligatory, there will be one lecture every day, detailed schedule will be specified). Thanks to successful completion of the course students will learn about historical development of the U.S. energy security in detail from the beginning of oil industry to the present. They will be able to analyze the impact of oil shocks in the 70´s and of other important historical events from the energy security point of view. Students will be able to define actors and characteristics of the U.S. energy security and analyze its foreign-policy consequences. In addition, they will be able to assess the issue of security of maritime oil supplies as well as selected recent trends in the U.S. energy security.

Teaching methods
Lectures involve class discussions and require active participation; position papers improve the ability of students to summarize an issue in the field of energy security of the USA and to evaluate it critically; readings serve to broaden and deepen the spectrum of knowledge students acquire during lectures.
Assessment methods
Mid-term test, final written test; composition of 7 position papers; active participation in class; obligatory participation in external teachers´ lectures.
