Course objectives
The course will introduce the basic aspects of qualitative research methods in the field of international relations and the part of European studies aiming at the research of the political dimension of the EU and European politics. The course covers relevant concept, methods, and research strategies.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, a student will be able to utilize qualitative methods, to understand the key concepts related to the qualitative research and will be able to apply the qualitative methods on the particular topic of the dissertation.
Syllabus
  • 1) Basic concepts of research in the social sciences 2) Discourse analysis 3) Process-tracing, historical, and ethnographical approaches 4) Content analysis 5) Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) as the concept and the method 6) Problem of contradictory configurations and logical remainders, how to cope with this, differences between cs QCA and fsQCA 7) Examples of practical application of the QCA, limits of its application, post-QCA analysis

Teaching methods
The course combines lectures with seminars.
Assessment methods
The students will get familiar with all the texts of the assigned readings. The teachers will test the knowledge and understanding of the texts during the seminars based on compulsory attendance (70 per cent of the final evaluation). The students will write an essay (circa 10-15 pages long) at the end of the course, in which they explain which qualitative methods and how they can use in their doctoral research (30 per cent of the final evaluation).
