Knowledge of the general part of public international law and domestic branches of the Czech public law (especially constitutional law).

Course objectives
Main objective of the course is to provide students with the ability of good orientation in different areas regulated by international law, in order to understand not only the contents, but also the substance of those rules. Particular attention is devoted to the international protection of human rights. The students should become familiar not only with particular rights, but with the international control mechanism as well. Students should also understand that international law is an integral part of the law binding the Czech Republic.
Learning outcomes
The student will be, after the completion of both parts of the subject (MPV I and II), able:
- to understand the system of rules on the functioning of the international community and acquire good orientation in this specific legal system;
- to evaluate the activities of states (e.g. use of force against another state, applying of sanctions);
- to understand the substance of an international treaty, also as a constituent part of the internal legal system and be able to interpret it and apply to the individual;
- to have a good inderstanding in matters of human rights protection at the international level and apply respective rules;
- identify and understand international law rules relating to the particular areas (such as diplomatic law, sea law, cosmic law)

  • 9. Aviation and cosmic law;
  • 10. Case study I: Foundation and dissolution of the Czechoslovak state;
  • 11. Case study II: Munich Agreement;
  • 12. Case study III: Armed invasion into Czechoslovakia in 1968;
  • 13. International law and global challenges - armament and disarmament, environment protection.

Teaching methods
Class discussion on practical examples and real cases is the essential educational method. It enables students to learn how to interpret and apply the sources of public international law and it also deepens the understanding of its general rules and principles.
Assessment methods
Seminars are compulsory and concentrate on the case law of international courts. Conditions for the credit are active participation and succesfull passing of the seminar test or alternative performance according to the instruction of the teacher
