Course objectives
Main aims of the course are:

- to get acquainted with the problematics of general and special Psychiatry and its connections to other specialisations;
- to familiarise with psychiatric terminology;
- to get acquainted with the methodology of psychiatric diagnostics and therapeutic approaches;
- to get acquainted with characteristics, symptoms, diagnostics, course and therapy of major mental disorders;
- to familiarise with the basic diagnostic and therapeutic process in patients with psychiatric symptomatology in general medical practice.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course a student will be able to:

- Describe and classify basic disorders of mental functions;
- Perform an examination of a patient with a psychiatric disorder;
- Describe principles of the psychiatric diagnostics;
- Describe a classification and indications of biological therapeutic methods and psychotherapy;
- Describe a classification, symptoms and course of main psychiatric disorders;
- Describe management and treatment options in main psychiatric disorders;
- Perform a necessary differential diagnosis and suggest a means to manage a patient showing symptoms of a mental disorder;
- Reproduce and apply legislation pertaining to psychiatric patients, especially hospitalisation without informed consent, possession of a driving license and gun license, criminal responsibility and legal capacity.

Assessment methods
CREDIT
To complete the course, a student has to attend the lessons, only one full day of excused absence is allowed. In case of more absences, substitution is required. Substitution is usually in the form of the written essay on a selected topic or short stay at one of the wards of Department of Psychiatry. The means of substitution can be arranged with the deputy for education.

The part of the final evaluation is a written test. The test is multiple-choice answer test with only one correct answer. To succeed in the test at least 8 out of 13 questions have to be answered correctly.

TEACHING OF PSYCHIATRIC-EXERCISES consists of the following SEGMENTS:

1. TEACHING SEMINARS:

are presentations on selected psychiatric topics. Together with literature studies and lectures it is supposed to provide students with a theoretical basis. Teaching takes place in the auditorium PK.

2. CASE CASES AND DEMONSTRATION OF CLINICAL CASES:

these are either in-patient interviews with the teacher, educational videos or interactive case reports. This segment of education should serve as a first step in the application of theoretical knowledge regarding differential diagnosis and therapy in psychiatry. Students are expected to take an active approach to solving the problems presented. Teaching takes place in the auditorium PK.

3. CLINICAL SKILLS:

it is a practice-oriented part of the teaching. In this segment of teaching, students themselves or under the supervision of the teachers examine selected patients, usually followed by a discussion. Teaching takes place in individual departments of PK.

ORGANIZATION

Teaching the subject Psychiatry - the exercise takes place in two-week blocks according to study groups. The maximum number of students to teach Psychiatry - exercise is 26 students for each block. Please observe this maximum number of students when enrolling in each study group.

Classes begin every day at 8.00 am (Friday at 7.30 am) in the lecture hall of the Psychiatric Clinic of the University Hospital Brno, Building G, 1st floor. Every day before classes begin, students gather in front of the PK Auditorium, Building G, the back wing on the first floor and wait for the secretary to unlock the auditorium.

Students will bring slippers, cloaks, stationery and record paper. They can keep these things in the back of the auditorium throughout the lessons.

On the days when students have the subject "Clinical Skills" (8.00 - 9.00 am) at PK departments, they first change their cloaks in the auditorium, they are checked and all things can be kept in the auditorium (in the department they will need only pencil and paper) ). Medics must lock the auditorium before leaving for the department and hand over the key to the secretary of Mr. Pazderová (in the case of Mrs. Doušková in her absence). After returning from the ward, they will collect the key from the auditorium again at the secretariat.

The obligatory part of the course is the participation of students in seminars (if they are held), which are on Friday from 10.00 to 12.20 in the auditorium PK. The program of professional seminars is posted on the door of the auditorium and on the website http://psychiatrie.med.muni.cz/ - link: News.

It is expected that students will be ready to teach. This means that they will have at least basic information, which will be discussed on the given day in the course of the seminar, respectively in the case reports and demonstrations. The electronic textbook “Psychiatric propedeutics” available at the Faculty of Medicine portal (http://portal.med.muni.cz/article-509-psychiatric-propedeutics.html) is a guide for the range of knowledge that a student should be able to grasp before starting the course.
