Course objectives
At the end of the course student should be able to understand mechanisms of xenobiotic (including drugs) effects and under which conditions they and their combinations may elicit therapeutic, adverse, and toxic effects, and what is the relation to the dose given, administration route, status of the organism (differences in pediatrics and geriatrics). They will be familiar with the requirements of "Good Clinical Practice" for development of new drugs, and duties of physicians in cooperation with the pharmaceutical industry and principles of pharmacovigilance. They will be able to recognize selected drug classes and pharmacological profiles of representative drugs from groups of drugs selected in the curriculum.

Syllabus
  • 1st lecture: Introduction to pharmacology. Receptor theory. How drugs act. Basic principles of pharmacology of peripheral nervous system.
  • 2st lecture: Basics of pharmacokinetics.Routes of administration of drugs, drug dosage forms.
  • 3st lecture:Therapy of pain.Opioid analgesic. NSAIDs. Analgesics-antipyretics.
  • 4st lecture: Basics of antimicrobial therapy.
  • 5st lecture:Therapy of allergy.
  • 6st lecture: Drugs affecting cardiovascular system, hypolipidemics
  • 7st lecture: Bank holiday
  • 8st lecture: General and local anaesthetics.
  • 9st lecture: Antidiabetics.
  • 10st lecture: Basics of psychopharmacology.

Teaching methods
Curriculum offers attendance at lectures read by teacher of pharmacology.
Assessment methods
During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. Students have to pass the exam: final written multiple-choice test (30 questions). In the Final Exam students are asked to answer to multiple-choice questions. Only 1 correct answer is possible to each question. One and half point is granted for each correctly answered question. The final evaluation respects the results of test from practicals. The points scored above minimal required value are added to the final score of the exam as follows: Final score = score from exam test + X; X = summary score from tests from practicals - 10 (minimal required value). The summary of the score obtained is evaluated as follows: mark A = 65-60 points; B = 59,5-55 points; C = 54,5-50 points; D = 49,5-44,5 points; E = 44-39 points; F = less than 39 points.
