- Course objectives
- A B2 course whose mission is to develop students' language in receptive (reading, listening), productive (speaking, writing), and interactive modes of communication. Its further aim is to foster autonomy in students by providing them with opportunities to regulate their own learning process (open glossary). It also offers tasks that will enable students to develop their academic skills, for example researching sources, arguing a point, synthesizing information, giving feedback, mediating information, and problem-solving. Also, the course materials provide a wide range of activities that are aimed at helping students to acquire specialist vocabulary.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, the student will be able to: understand spoken texts dealing with SNE issues at B2 level of the CEFR; understand written texts dealing with SNE issues at B2 level of the CEFR; produce an argumentative synthesis; provide peer review; present a persuasive talk and write a report. They will also be able to use specialist terminology related to selected topics.

- Credit requirements: 1) Attendance (only two undocumented absences are allowed), completing in-term tasks/home preparation for classes, active participation in classes; 2) Submitting writing assignments: an argumentative synthesis & a report; 3) Giving a talk about the synthesis 4) Giving peer feedback on the synthesis, talk, and report; 5) Contributing to an open glossary 6) Oral exam: presenting the tasks the student has worked on throughout the semester and reflecting on the process of accomplishing them.

To be allowed to take the exam, students must submit all the assignments and achieve at least 52 points (65%).

- Course objectives
- The course mission is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) language skills and to enhance their grammar and vocabulary knowledge at level B2 by means of academic topics relating to the sphere of special needs education. In terms of academic skills, special emphasis is put on producing a coherent Master's thesis abstract and understadning the process of composing a concise literature review.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, the student will be able to: understand spoken texts dealing with SNE issues at B2 level of the CEFR; understand written texts dealing with SNE issues at B2 level of the CEFR; produce a Master's thesis abstract; understand the principles of constructing an effective literature review; successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with SNE issues at B2 level of the CEFR; use selected specialist terminology with natural and sophisticated control; show a good command of selected grammar structures at B2 level of the CEFR.
- Syllabus
- Subject-specific topics: 1) Intellectual disability. Teaching students general learning disability. 2) Specific learning difficulties. Teaching students with SLDs. 3) Autism spectrum disorders. 4) Behavioural disorders (ADD, ADHD, ODD and CD). 5) Psychic disorders in children and teenagers. 6) Current cure approaches and therapies in special needs education. Academic skills: Academic speaking - expressing professional opinion, agreement and disagreement; asking for clarification, more information, etc. Academic writing - writing a thesis abstract and a literature review. General vocabulary and grammar: conditionals; articles; countable and uncountable nouns; some, any, no…; reported speech; selected B2 structures; prepositional phrases; transitional expressions; phrasal verbs.

- Weekly ninety-minute seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (activities developing language skills and grammar/vocabulary knowledge at level B2: listening and reading tasks, grammar and vocabulary practice, pair/group/class discussions and other kinds of speaking activities, collaborative writing, providing peer-feedback, etc.).
- Assessment methods
- Credit requirements: 1) Attendance (only two absences are acceptable), completed in-term tasks/home preparation for classes, active participation in classes; 2) Submitted writing assignments: Master's thesis abstract + literature review (must be submitted prior to the oral part of the exam); 3) Exam: 2 parts: A) written (parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of English, writing, SNE terminology); level B2. Total: 70 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % B) Oral – A) monologue + B) spoken interaction between two students. Total: 30 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % In order to be allowed to sit the final exam, students must complete all in-term assignments and meet all deadlines. The oral part of the exam can be taken only by students who have passed the written part. Ústní část zkoušky mohou absolvovat výhradně ti studenti, kteří splní její písemnou část.
