Course objectives
The course builds on students' knowledge and experience gained in the courses School Education, didactics, and from the school practice. The aim of the course is to prepare students for effective planning and teaching with textbooks. The course focuses on knowledge extension in the area of textbook qualities and principles of functioning, the reflection of current technological and methodical trends in the area of textbook design (e.g. in terms of e-textbooks and e-sources), creating a repertoire of activities for the instruction with textbooks, and gaining an overview of current textbooks on the market. The students will get an opportunity to discuss their experience with an expert from practice (e.g. textbook authors and representatives from publishing houses).
Learning outcomes
Course outcomes:
a) the student uses basic terminology of the textbook theory;
b) the student reflects and compares the use of printed and electronic textbooks;
c) the student characterizes quality criteria for the selection and use of textbooks;
d) the student applies current textbook research and methodology findings in textbook evaluation and use;
e) the student applies current methodology trends in his/her lesson plans based on the textbook use.

  • 1) introduction to the textbook theory - effectiveness of components, current textbook research findings;
  • 2) selecting an appropriate textbook;
  • 3) methods of textbook based instruction;
  • 4) methodical and electronic resources of textbooks;
  • 5) printed textbook vs. e-textbook;
  • 6) presentations of microteaching activities with a selected textbook.

Assessment methods
The course is completed by a colloquium. For completing the course it is required:
- active participation, fulfilment of current tasks of the lecturer,
- own presentation of microteaching using a selected textbook
- short assignment reflecting the knowledge gained in the course (1 standard page) - evaluation of a selected textbook and its e-sources
