The English course for intermediate students (Level B1) who can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc., who can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest, and can read texts and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Course objectives
In the compulsorily-optional English as a Foreign Language Course A, the students will consolidate their language skills from secondary school (Pass in 'maturita' in English is required), and will learn some selected academic skills (oral presentation, supporting argument, discussion, etc.) in English. Successful students will be credited for active participation in the lessons, for oral and written presentations.
Syllabus
  • Topic 1 Education in the CR and the UK. Tertiary education. Texts on education, similarities and differences, universities Study skills – discussion based on experience, expressing opinion, making a statement, Academic skills – key words, summarizing, basic reading techniques, mini-presentation Assignments – Reading Comprehension Sheet 1 (standardized layout: key words, summary, opinion), long-term task – create your own topic based vocabulary Grammar - revision of present simple+present continuous, past simple+continuos, prepositions of time and place Topic 2 Psychological development. Growing up with focus on adolescence. Texts on stages of life and personality development Study skills – opinion exchange, personal experience, reflection based on notes, role play Academic skills – critical thinking, note taking Grammar – present perfect simple+continuous, future Assignments – topic based vocabulary Mid-term test - passmark 60% Revision of vocabulary and grammar (tenses) studied in the first part of the term Topic 3 Interpersonal relationships. Who knows you better? Texts on friendship, family relationship, partnership Study skills – giving and supporting arguments, comparing similarities and differences, picture description Academic skills –- summarising, key words, expressing opinion - revision and enhancement Grammar – adjectives – personal qualities, comparatives, superlatives, Assignments – reading comprehension sheet 2, topic based vocabulary Topic 4 Non-verbal communication. Body language. Texts on importance of non-verbal communication Study skills – discussion, opinion exchange, supporting arguments Academic skills dialogues and arguments Grammar – modals Assignment – describe your picture, topic based vocabulary
