Course objectives
The lecture provides a short survey on the morphology of German concentrating on inflectional morphology. In the course of the semester, basic concepts for analyzing morphological structure (e.g. affix, root, and stem) are introduced, as well as widely used classifications (word categories, paradigms, inflectional classes). All concepts are illustrated by language material taken from contemporary German. Emphasis is put on a comparative perspective on different theoretical approaches (e.g. morphology as the internal structure of words vs. word and paradigm morphology) and on critical assessment of the concrete solutions chosen in different textbooks of German grammar. As the presentation will introduce a wealth of examples of German word forms, students will develop their practical knowledge of German declension and conjugation. However, for practical exercises in building up German word forms, an additional course (NJ_G211 Cvičení z německé morfologie) is offered during the semester.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able
- to define and explain the basic concepts of morphological analysis (e.g., affix, paradigm, word form etc.);
- to identify the internal structure of inflected or derived words and to distinguish between both types (inflection vs. derivation);
- to name the grammatical categories relevant for different parts of speech;
- to actively form the regular and the most important irregular word forms of German inflection;
- to recognize different theoretical approaches to the description of German morphology, to compare them and to select the most adequate for their own purposes;
