Course objectives
After completion of the course, student will be able to carry out expert assessment of archaeological findings from the Central European Stone Age (from Palaeolithic to the end of Eneolithic). It includes frame dating, cultural, technological and functional determination.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, student working as an archaeologist in excavations or in a museum will be able to identify material from the Stone Age, properly date and culturally determine the finds assemblages and material collections, and choose the proper excavation and conservation method with regard to their specifics, so that all archaeological data are preserved for subsequent evaluation.

  • 1. Seminar introduction: types of material culture, raw-materials in Stone Age, methods of expert analysis;
  • 2. Introduction to expert analysis of ceramics;
  • 3. Neolithic ceramics;
  • 4. Lengyel and early eneolithic ceramics;
  • 5. Eneolithic ceramics;
  • 6. Introduction to expert analysis of knapped stone industry (lithics);
  • 7. Identification of retouched tools;
  • 8. Expert analysis of lithics from Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age;
  • 9. Organic material culture;
  • 10. Methods of expert analysis of metal artefacts;
  • 11. Methods of expert analysis of stone macrolithic tools;
  • 12. Methods of expert analysis hard organic raw materials;
