Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the linguistic aspects of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) as well as the implications for teaching language for specific purposes. The course will offer an insight into theoretical perspectives informing ESP and major issues ESP practitioners deal with, such as needs analysis, course design built around the skills and genres appropriate to the discipline, the roles of ESP teachers and specific challenges in ESP testing.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to: 1. describe the main theoretical pillars in the design of ESP courses 2. understand the principles of genre-based course design 3. identify the main stakeholders in ESP courses and their perspectives 4. conduct a needs analysis using qualitative or quantitative methods, understand different views of needs in teaching ESP 5. select appropriate methods for a group of ESP learners, e.g. problem-based learning, case-study approach etc. 6. select and evaluate published ESP materials taking different criteria and learners´ needs into account and use an authentic text in a way it suits the needs of a particular group of ESP learners 7. present different positions on ESP testing and explain the matching of testing methods and teaching methods 8. plan and evaluate an ESP lesson

Assessment methods
Attendance is compulsory. Students will select and evaluate a set of ESP materials and present the results of their research. They will also submit a lesson plan for a particular ESP area specifying the lesson objectives, methods and materials used, justifying their relevance to the given discipline.
