The course should be taken together with the course BA_06 Medieval History of the Baltic Region. However, in the case of interest, anyone may register.

Course objectives
The students are given a list of literary works (fiction as well as chronicles), which they have to learn to interpret as historical sources for the period concerned (the Middle Ages of the Baltic region). They also receive instruction and questions, which help them to prepare their papers.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to evaluate a historical source, express its content and distinguish different historical layers of a text.

  • 1) Introduction, registration to the presentations and groups 2) The presentation of the analysis of a prescribed text for the first group. 3) The deadline for the first paper. 4) The presentation of the analysis of a prescribed text for the second group. 5) The deadline for the second paper. 6) The presentation of the analysis of a prescribed text for the third group. 7) The deadline for the third paper. Teaching methods
Home reading and analysis of three texts. One analysis of a prescribed text is presented and discussed by the group in class. Two other analyses are prepared on their own as homework.
Assessment methods
The group presentation and the two papers are graded by max 10 points. The minimum amount of points required is 21.
