Prerequisites
The condition for a student to be admitted to the final bachelor's examination is the completion of the bachelor's studies, i.e. it is necessary to fulfil all the obligations prescribed by the study plan of this programme. Confirmation of fulfillment of the requirements is issued by the MU Faculty of Arts Study Department.

Final exam, the legal condition to obtain the Bc. degree in Baltic studies.
Learning outcomes
After successfully passing the state exam the student is awarded the title of bachelor of the Baltic studies.
Syllabus
  • BALTIC STUDIES: STATE FINAL BACHELOR EXAM
  • The scope of the State Final Examination in Baltistics varies according to which plan of this program the student is studying: for students of Baltistics as a single subject (with any language specialization) and for students in a combined studies with Baltistics as the MAIN program, the requirements listed below under A apply.
  • For students in a combined program with Baltistics as the MINOR program, the requirements listed below under B apply.
  • A:
  • SINGLE SUBJECT study and
  • COMBINED studies with Baltic Studies as the MAIN programme
  • 1. Thesis defense. 2. Examination: (a) Examination in the language (Lithuanian or Finnish): I. The student will be given a Lithuanian/Finnish text and 5 questions in Lithuanian/Finnish four days before the date of the examination. At home he/she will translate the text and prepare written answers to the questions in Lithuanian/Finnish. The translation and the answers shall be handed in to the Board the day before the examination. The board will assess the translation and answers, discuss any shortcomings with the student at the examination and follow up with a free discussion of the content of the text (all in Lithuanian/Finnish). II. The student draws one of the conversation topics (see list below) and, after a short preparation, converses on the topic with the committee in Lithuanian/Finnish. b) Examination in the history of culture and literature. The student draws two questions from the list below and, after preparation, discusses each of them with the committee in Czech.

  • 2. Human characteristics (talking about a particular person's characteristics, his/her appearance, his/her habits)
  • 3. Weather and climate in Finland/Lithuania and the specifics of the way of life related to it
  • 4. Nature in Finland/Lithuania, common plant and animal species, nature conservation
  • 5. Holidays and customs in Finland/Lithuania
  • 6. Historical milestones in Finnish/Lithuanian history (where Finland/Lithuania ever belonged, when the independent states were established, important political and cultural events in their history)
  • 7. Schools and education system in Finland/Lithuania: largest universities, personal experience of studying in Lithuania/Finland
  • 8. State structure and politics in Finland/Lithuania
  • 9. An account of an important person in the cultural history of independent Finland / independent Lithuania (of your choice)
  • 10. A description of  a popular Finnish/Lithuanian novel by a contemporary author
  • List of questions on the history of culture and literature:
  • For each question, knowledge of the political context of the period is assumed.
  • 1) Pre-Christian culture of the Baltic tribes: main genres, religious ideas, degree of preservation of these cultural forms, main sources.
  • 2) Pre-Christian culture of Baltofin tribes: main genres, religious ideas, degree of preservation of these cultural forms, main sources.
  • 3) The linguistic and religious situation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Lithuania Minor in the  16th-18th centuries.
  • 4) The linguistic and religious situation of Finland in the  16th-18th centuries.
  • 5) The linguistic and religious situation of Livonia and the successor states in the  16th-18th centuries.
  • 6) Writing and printing in Lithuania and in Prussia from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
  • 7) Writing and book printing in Finland from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
  • 8) Writing and printing in Livonia and successor states from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
  • 9) The history of education in Lithuania and  Prussia from the Middle Ages to the 19th century: monasteries, schools, universities, other intellectual centers
  • 10) History of education in Finland from the Middle Ages to the 19th century: monasteries, schools, universities, other intellectual centres
  • 11) Texts and personalities of the Finnish national revival.
  • 12) Texts and personalities of the Lithuanian national revival.
  • 13) Texts and personalities of the Estonian national revival.
  • 14) Texts and personalities of the Latvian national revival.
  • B
  • STATE FINAL BACHELORS EXAM for students of combined studies with baltistics as a MINOR subject
  • This exam has the following parts:
  • 1. the language exam (Lithuanian or Finnish):
  • a) The student will be given a Lithuanian/Finnish text and 5 questions in Lithuanian/Finnish four days before the date of the examination.
