Course objectives
Upon completing this course the students should be able to understand the poetry of so called "generace buřičů", he/she is able to define this term and understands the historical context. He/she is as well informed about the work of each and every author and their different poetics. An integral part of goals is an ability to analyse and interpret poems and present one's findings.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic historical context; basic primary and secondary literature. Is there anything like "generace buřičů"? (or Buriánek vs. Dějiny nové moderny); individuals, or a generation? ("generace buřičů" as "a generation of individuals"); 2. Česká moderna, decadence, and origins of "generace buřičů" (Toman: Pohádky krve; Dyk: A porta inferi; Neumann: Nemesis, bonorum custos); 3. Against everyone (Šrámek: Života bído, přec tě mám rád; Modrý a rudý; Gellner: Po nás ať přijde potopa + Radosti života; Bezruč: Slezské písně; Toman: Torzo života; 4. Changing poetics (Bezruč - different editions of Slezské písně; Toman - from Pohádky krve to Měsíce and Stoletý kalendář; Dyk - from satire to concillation; Šrámek - from poetry to drama and prose; Neumann - from decadenc to socialism); 5. Petr Bezruč: Slezské písně; 6. Karel Toman: Měsíce; 7. Prose (Dyk: Krysař; Šrámek: Stříbrný vítr); 8. Lives - sensations and reality (Toman's wandering; Dyk's radicalism; Neumann's eccentricity; Bezruč - Vašek, or Petr?; Gellner's disappearance); 9. "Generace buřičů" today (influence on other authors, music, movies); 10. Didactic interpretation.
