Course objectives
The subject follows on from CJCC02. The aim of the subject is to strengthen and deepen the knowledge which the student acquired in CJCC02, and in addition to master accurate expression (oral and written), which is grounded in complete comprehension of grammatical and orthographical features. Making Czech grammar instinctive (C1 level of the CEFR) and developing and deepening it in spoken and written expression at C2 level of the CEFR. Thorough practice of Czech grammar with an emphasis on systematically revising the Czech declension system and Czech conjugation, verb phrases, modal prefixes, differences between verbs with different prefixes and word formation (practical exercises).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- apply the acquired knowledge of Czech grammar in practical real-life communication, both oral and written (at C2 level of the CEFR);
- create a grammatically, orthographically and lexically correct résumé on the basis of a written or spoken text (of an artistic or non-artistic nature);
- understand, use and subsequently explain grammatical features, which were consolidated and analysed once more in the given period; - understand the structural differences between Czech and their mother tongue;
- find and subsequently correct mistakes in a given text;
- justify their corrections;
- achieve readiness and assurance in expression comparable with a native speaker.
They will use the acquired knowledge in written and spoken language, for instance in writing a paper, preparing a presentation in subjects on the joint basis of the subjects Czech language and literature, or in writing their diploma thesis.
Syllabus
  • 1/ creation of a grammatically, lexically and orthographically correct résumé on the basis of a written or spoken text of an artistic or non-artistic nature, work with follow-up exercises related to the text;
  • 2/ in exercises emphasis is placed on systematic practice of the declension systém and verb conjugation;
  • 3/ syntax- coordination- determination, linking words; converting direct and indirect speech; word order;
  • 4/ as part of the lessons the student enriches their vocabulary from the texts covered;
  • 5/ verbs- modal prefixes, differences between verbs with various prefixes; prefix verbs with reversed meanings; prefix verbs with multi-word formulations;
  • 6/ creating nouns (selected types) – gender inflection, nationalities and languages, diminutives of names, collective nouns, agent names, professions, story names, differences between nouns from the same root and from different roots, univerbation;
  • 7/ ‘revision lessons‘, which the student completes in writing, check the student’s progress and form part of each seminar.

Teaching methods
Classes led by the teacher (theoretical preparation), homework, completing exercises (oral and written), individual work, group work, presentations in the lesson based on self-study, a résumé prepared on the basis of a text which the student has read, correction exercises, ‘review lessons‘ – written progress tests.
Assessment methods
To complete the course it is necessary to successfully fulfill the requirements of the closing written test and to prepare of a résumé of a text they have read. It is also necessary to abide by the following regulations: 1/ Attendance of lessons includes completing work set by the teacher (homework, in-class presentations etc.) Failure to complete this work (student’s lack of preparation) is counted as an absence. 2/ Students are not allowed to change groups, apart from in exceptional cases with the prior written permission of the teacher.
