Course objectives
This optional lecture with an hour of seminar (1 hour + 1 hour) is an introduction to the study of contemporary French novel from the perspective of the evolution of French society. A brief overview of the most important realizing mutations of the latter will be the basis of that analysis of literary texts will support and develop. Will be studied writers such as Michel Houellebecq, Jean Echenoz, Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Annie Ernaux François Bon, Leslie Kaplan, Jean Rouaud, Pierre Bergounioux, Eric Chevillard Marie Ndiaye and others. After a brief table outlining the major directions of contemporary narrative literature, the fundamental part of the course is to observe the changes in French society since 1980, as it has been studied, reviewed by the contemporary sociologists and philosophers like Peter Lassave Gilles Lipovetsky, Marc Augé, Alain Finkielkraut, Pascale Weil, Luc Ferry, etc. Follow the interpretative part that will aim to apply these observations on the literary text. This part will take place completely according to the intentions of the participants of the course.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to: - Identify and summarize important features of French contemporary novel; - write an essay (dissertation) defining the basic aesthetic principles of this period based on an analysis of the works of compulsory reading;
- critically evaluate and analyze one selected work in a seminar paper.
