Course objectives
Mental feature of enlightenment in the Czech lands The objective of this course is to introduce the role of the church, state, and society within the changing conditions of the enlightenment period in the Czech lands. The basic priority is to perceive basic development trends of the enlightenment within the church sphere and their special aspects in the Austrian or Czech environment, which is also helped by an analysis of contemporary texts, particularly satirical and critical works of Austrian enlightenment bookmen, as well as analysis of the dispute of the “men around the throne” on the direction of the reformation in the church sphere.
Learning outcomes
Students of the course will be able to describe the basic developmental trends in the history of the enlightenment within the church sphere and their special aspects in the Austrian or Czech environment.

  • Objectives of the course 1. Prologue of the enlightenment in the church context of Austria • 2. Josephine church reformations • 3. Objectionable aspects of the church reformations, i.e. monastic sanctuary, monastic prisons, religious processions and pilgrimages, religious holidays, etc. • 4. State and the church: General seminaries, new parish system, shanty parishes • 5. Church in satirical writings of enlightenment thinkers • 6. Secularization of society • 7. Church and revolution, enlightened priests • 8. Tolerated religions and their position • 9. Governor, religion and the church • 10. Economic impacts of the enlightenment church reformations • 11. Enlightenment and the church in legal iconography • 12. Freemasons and Illuminates • 13. Decay of the enlightenment and conservative influences

Teaching methods
The course has three different methodological formats: lecture, seminar and practical. Lectures are given by the teachers, while students will present papers at the seminars. The practical format consists of a joint discussion on historical texts and illustrations.
