Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give a general overview of Italian art and civilization. The course can help students orient themselves in the Italian art and culture, and to achieve a general knowledge of the Italian masters, of the regional art schools and styles. The student should be able to recognize better the different artistic productions and autors in the right cultural context and historical period. He should learn to describe also the artwork with the richest Italian vocabulary possible.
Syllabus
  • Italian Art and Culture: XIV-XVII Century
  • 1- The beginnings of Humanism: the Giotto and Masaccio frescoes.
  • 2- The “modern man”: the sculpture and architecture of Donatello, Brunelleschi, Alberti in Florence.
  • 3- History and myth in Mantova and Florence: the painters Mantegna and Botticelli.
  • 4- Astronomy in Ferrara: the frescoes of Palazzo Schifanoia.
  • 5- From Renaissance to Mannerism: The Sistine Chapel and the sculptures of Michelangelo Buonarroti.
  • 6- Ancient and modern Rome: the “Stanze Vaticane” frescoes of Raphael Sanzio.
  • 7- Art and science in the artworks of Leonardo da Vinci in Milan.
  • 8- Nature and landscape in Venice: from Giorgione to Tiziano Vecellio, Tintoretto.
  • 9 - Portrait of the Renaissance aristocratic man of Bronzino, Parmigianino, Correggio, Tiziano Vecellio.
  • 10- The Counter-Reformation: from Carracci brothers to the baroque painting of Pietro da Cortona.
  • 11- The Baroque realism of Caravaggio in Rome and in Naples.
  • 12- Between art and theatre: the architecture and decoration of Bernini and Borromini.

Teaching methods
Lectures. The course is based on theoretical and linguistic preparation of the student and on visual documentation of Italian artworks. The student should focus the attention both on the visual documentation of the artistic production and on the critical texts listed in the bibliography.
Assessment methods
Examination: Written critical description of Italian artwork and of his cultural contest, and oral presentation of the written work during the lesson. The student can choose the theme of his work among the topics of the course. The attendance to the course is recommended.
