Course objectives
This course is a facultative sequel to the course Literature in Cultural Context. It is focused on interpretation of humour in literary works and in the cultural context. Attention is paid to the theories of humour developed by foreign and Czech scholars. The topics we deal with are related to the history of literature and culture from Antiqity to the present day; they comprise literary works both Czech and foreign and varoius literary genres.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able
to interpret humour in literature and culture;
to orientate themselves in academic literature concerning humour, literary history and culture;
to evaluate critically both scientific literature and popular science literature;
to apply acquired knowledge during the elaboration of their own works.
Syllabus
  • First of all, students will be familiarized with recommended literature. On the basis of an agreement with the teacher they will choose the topics of their papers. In the subsequent lessons they will give their presentations and discuss them together and with the teacher. On the basis of an agreement we shall use DVDs and CDs (films, TV films, theatre performances etc.). The following aspects will be discussed: results of presentations, methods used in their preparation, relevant primary and secondary literature, specificity of using classic and internet sources (including classical and electronic books).

Seminar. Lecturing; elaboration of a seminar paper on a selected topic; presentation and discussion.
Assessment methods
Students wil be credited for presenting their seminar papers and for passing the colloqium on the topics we dealt with during the course.
