    Course objectives
    Geographic, political, social and economic characteristics of the Republic of North Macedonia. On successful completion of the course student will acquire necessary knowledge and arguing skill on the Macedonian life and institutions as well as to the political development and cultural specifics of this country.
    Learning outcomes
    Student will be introduced to cultural specifics and political and social development of North Macedonia since the dissolution of Yugoslavia till today. The historical and cultural background of the Macedonian question, the root of extraordinary conflict potential, that is present in the area since 19th century, will be discussed as well. Absolvent will be able to discuss about these questions.
    Syllabus
    • 1) One or more Macedonians? Historic borders and mental maps. 2) History as a war field: Macedonia in the light of competitive national historiographies. 3) Who are the Macedonians? The creation of nation as an adventure with not clear ending. 4) Disputed statehood: Republic of North Macedonia in the international context. 5) How is life like in Macedonia? Politics, society and economic of the Republic of North Macedonia. 6) Mountainous Balkans with a little sip of Mediterranean: natural treasure of the Republic of North Macedonia. 7) Byzantines and Ottomans, communists and nationalists: architectural and visual arts of the Republic of North Macedonia. 8) From folk music to Byzantine rock: Macedonian music. 9) In the name of searching for national identity: Macedonian filmography.

    Lectures, home reading, class discussion.
    Assessment methods
    Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion. Oral exam concentrates on the student’s knowledge of the subject matter and the relevant literature.
