Course objectives
The main objective of the lecture Archaic Latin is both a theoretical introduction to the specific lingustical features of archaic Latin documents and the development of archaic Latin towards the classical period, and a practical knowledge which shall be based on reading of selected archaic inscriptions and passages of Plauts´s comedies.
Learning outcomes
After completion of this course the students will be able to put Latin into the broader context of languages attested in ancient Italy, to describe the main features of the archaic stage of Latin language from the phonological, morphological and syntactical point of view. They will be acquainted with the main epigrafical documents of the archaic period and will be able to identify the particular archaic lingiustic phenomena
Syllabus
  • 1. The Pre-literary period of the Latin language.
  • 2. The languages of ancient Italy.
  • 3. Latin alphabet.
  • 4. Specific fonological features of archaic Latin: qualitative and quantitative changes of vowels, monophtongation of diphtongs.
  • 5. Changes of consonants.
  • 6. Specific morphological features of archaic Latin: declension of nouns.
  • 7. Latin Perfect and relict archaic categories of time and mode. 8. Archaic inscriptions.
  • 9. Specific linguistical features of Plautus Latin - syntax and stylistics.
  • 10. Intriduction to metrics of Plautus.
  • 11. Reading selected passages of Palutus´s comedies.
