Course objectives
The course presents the basic ethical values of the earliest ancient civilizations of Middle East, India, and China and compares these to those formulated in the Old and New Testament as well as to the Greco-Roman ancient world. It demonstrates the links of humanity in the frame of ethical thinking and practice.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students will:
- have knowledge and broader understanding of the stable values of the ancient Near East, India and China and their changes in the so-called transitory periods of history;
- have the knowledge of the relatives of ancient man to the civilization and nature;
- be able to compare the contemporary values with those of the Antiquity and to examine the basis of the modern scale of ethic values;
- be able to discuss the importance of ethic heritage of the oldest ancient civilizations.
Syllabus
  • 1) World order and its reflection in the sources of ancient Orient.
  • 2) The ethics of state and law in Mesopotamia.
  • 3) The ethics of ancient Egypt.
  • 4) Religiosity of the abovementoned civilizations and its reflection in the precepts of interpersonal relationships.
  • 5) The Old Testament from the point of view of cultural exchange in Middle East.
  • 6) The morality of the transient era (the Greek Dark Ages).
  • 7) The values of consolidation periods (the Greek Archaic period).
  • 8) Obligations and virtues of Greek citizens; the constitutions of Greek poleis, their strong and weak points.
  • 9) Religion and philosophy, ritual and rationality.
  • 10) The ethical values of Roman citizens during the Republic and the Principate. 11) The ethics of rule, war and peace, citizenship and the relationship to the inhabitants of provinces and foreigners in Roman Empire.
