Course objectives
The aim of the course is to get students acquainted with the orthographic norm of present-day Czech and with works providing the codification of Standard Czech. Attention will be paid to the explanation of orthographical issues, to special characteristics and frequent mistakes in written texts. Besides the purely orthographical problems, the issues relating to morphology and syntax will be accounted for (e. g. problematical wordforms, stylistic differentiation of doublet endings, formation and application of participles, nominative, adjective or verbal phrases and the like). The focus of the course is on the practical mastering of the given issues – after the tutor’s explanations of the theory, the specific problematic issues (e. g. capitalization, prepositions and prefixes s-/z-/vz-, punctuation and others) will be practised in the form of dictations, fill-in and proofreading exercises.
On the basis of the acquired knowledge, the students will be able to apply the present-day rules of orthography and to identify offences against the language standard in specific texts assigned to them.
