Course objectives
The course is an introduction to the study of sign languages from the linguistic point of view. The students will make themselves familiar with the basic terminology and issues of the field. They will learn the inventory of Czech sign language phonemes (partly in contrast with the phonemes of other sign languages), the method of the minimal pairs a the principle of the duality of pattering in natural language. They will observe the iconicity and arbitrariness on the examples from sign language.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students can analyze a Czech sign language lexical unit into its parameters. They understand the role of the phoneme in natural language and they can describe it on a particular example.
