Course objectives
The course introduces the students to the linguistic disciplines, the basic linguistic terms. The focus is on the structuralistic aspect of linguistic studies. In comparison with the studies in Norway, the course is basically equal to the "forproeve i lingvistikk".
Syllabus
  • Week 9 Introduction. The theoretical background in our point of view. Linguistics and their object of study. Close disciplines. The language and its definition. The traditions on Czech and Norwegian school institutions. Week 10 Basic terms in the linguistic theory with a special focus on the structuralism. The semiotics. The sign and the dichotomy. The synchronic and the diachronic method of linguistics. More about the synchrony. The paradigmatic and the syntagmatic aspect of the language. Week 11 The phonetics and the phonology. The object of study, the terms. Week 12 The morphology. The object of study, the terms. Week 13 The syntax. The object of study, the terms. Week 14 The vocabulary. The semantics vs. the pragmatics. Week 15 The diachronic linguistics. The historical relationship between languages. Language families. The development. Week 16 The diachronic methods. The etymology, reconstruction, neogrammarian laws. Week 17 The speech vs. the written text. Different writing systems. The development. Week 18 The Norwegian language development in a short overview. Week 19 The geographic and social differentiation. Week 20 The summary: different schools of linguistics will be compared with a focus on different aspects of the language. The development of the main streams in the linguistic studies. Week 21 The summary.

Teaching methods
The seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge. It also uses collective work, in-class discussions and individual work of students.
