Course objectives
In the seminar students will gain the basic knowledge and skills in the area of both active and passive translation of various texts. Participants can be divided into two seminar groups: 1/ translation of commercial, technical and scientific texts, 2/ translation of publicistic and artistic texts).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student:
- acquire basic skills, including translation of factual, publicistic and artistic texts;
- will know basic literature on theoretical and applied translatology;
- will have a theoretical background and use the translator's procedures;
- will be able to work with specific texts and lexicographical works.
Syllabus
  • The seminars will be focused on the translation of stylistically diverse texts form Polish to Czech, examples:
  • 1. Professional text in the field of economics/law
  • 2. Business/advertising text
  • 3. Commentary / Feuilleton
  • 4. Contemporary novel
  • 5. Contemporary drama
  • 6. Professional text in the field of tourism
  • 7. Technical documentation / operating instructions
  • 8. Official document

Teaching methods
Practical translatological execises and comments on selected translatological questions. Attendance is taken for granted, otherwise there is a focus on self-study of given study materials.
Assessment methods
Continuous evaluation method - translations of texts assigned during the semester are evaluated. Compulsory attendance (3 unexcused absences are allowed). Failure to submit the assigned written translation by the deadline is also considered an absence (one exception allowed). Missing translations (if two or more) must be submitted by the end of the credit week.
Grading scale: A = 100-90%, B 89-85%, C 84-75%, D 74-70%, E 69-60%, F 59-0%.
