Course objectives
The seminar is focused on Proto-Slavonic as the starting point in the development of Czech (especially of Old Czech). The course deals with the relation of Proto-Slavonic to other Indo-European languages, with the development of Proto-Slavonic phonology and morphology, with the dialectal split of Proto-Slavonic, especially with regard to the position of Czech in the process of differentiation of Slavonic languages. Attention is paid especially to those phonological and morphological features that are significant for understanding of Old and Modern Czech (the course thus touches information necessary for the following course “From Old Czech to Modern Czech”). Beginnings of Slavonic literature (especially on this territory) and the development of Slavonic script are partially reflected. At the end of the course students will be able to reconstruct the Proto-Slavonic form of words, to give the Proto-Czech/Old Czech form of words on the basis of reconstructed Proto-Slavonic forms, to decline Proto-Slavonic names, to conjugate Proto-Slavonic verbs and also to be able to read texts written in the Cyrillic script.
