Course objectives
The course follows the basic course PS_BA016 Methodology of Psychology II. The course aims to expand students' competence in the area of qualitative methodology, to expand the ability to independently carry out a qualitative analysis of text (or visual and / or audio-visual) documents through specialized qualitative methodology software (program Atlas.ti).
Learning outcomes
Student bude po absolvování předmětu schopen:
- identifikovat a shrnout důležité rysy počítačově podporovaného kvalitativního výzkumu,
- praktikovat základní základní dovednosti počítačově podporovaného kvalitativního výzkumu: data management, segmentace textu, kódování, psaní komentářů a poznámek atd.,
- praktikovat pokročilé metody a postupy počítačově podporovaného kvalitativního výzkumu: konceptuální práce s kódy, komplexní vyhledávání, vizualizace atd.,
- pracovat s programy počítačově podporovaného kvalitativního výzkumu systematicky v kontextu metodických a strategických otázek kvalitativní analýzy (zakotvená teorie),
- realizovat techniky kvalitativní analýzy dat v prostředí specializovaného software (získané kompetence jsou přenositelné na většinu aktuálně dostupných software, předmět je vyučován na programu Atlas.TI). 858/5000 Student will be able to:
- Identify and summarize important features of computer-aided qualitative research,
- practice basic basic skills of computer-aided qualitative research: data management, text segmentation, coding, writing comments and notes, etc.,
- practice advanced methods and procedures of computer-aided qualitative research: conceptual work with codes, complex search, visualization, etc.,
- work with programs of computer-aided qualitative research systematically in the context of methodological and strategic questions of qualitative analysis (grounded theory),
- implement qualitative data analysis techniques in a specialized software environment (acquired competencies are transferable to most currently available software, subject is taught on Atlas.TI).
Syllabus
  • The course will take place in thematic blocks: Part I: Introduction, repetition of the principles of qualitative analysis with a focus on grounded theory (GTM), contexts of digitization. Guidelines for getting digitized material to work in the program (optional, students can work with their own material or training data).
  • II. part: Program presentation and basic data management. Basic principles of coding - coding theory and its principles: snippets creation, memos/comment writing, coding, what is code, function of codes in qualitative analysis, types of codes (in vivo vs professional, grounded vs theoretical, organizational vs meaning etc.), first reading, code names and associated risks (quantity, generality, complexity, multivariate), relationship between research question and individual codes, categorization (code list, association of same-meaning-codes, sub-code creation). Custom code creation, comments, memo notes and hyperlinks in Atlas.TI. Practice coding of training data.
  • III. part: Conceptual work with codes (mutual relations between codes), visualization (word list creation, word map creation - word cloud, networking, creation of code trees). Practicing conceptual work with codes.
  • IV. part: Analysis and interpretation: skeleton of analytical story (argument line), formulation of theory (criterion), criteria of evaluation of final theory (credibility, originality, resonance, usefulness, measure of generality, etc.). Optional presentation of results: how to present the results obtained by qualitative analysis through the program, how to write an article, produce and review the training articles of the trainees.
Teaching methods
158/5000 Teaching methods - lectures, study of literature, analysis of data materials (texts, videos, graphic products), discussion, analytical work on empirical data.
Assessment methods
Credit verifies the ability of students to apply acquired competences of qualitative data analysis in psychological research. The student describes the procedure and demonstrates the partial steps of analytical work on specific data in the Atlas.TI program.
Language of instruction
Czech
