Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present the concept of digital codicology and palaeography as part of 21st century research, and to enrich the traditional teaching of codicology and palaeography with innovative tools. Students will get introduced to online tools for comparing texts, important databases and catalogues or with the limits of digital research. The course is focused on practice, students will work on assigned tasks directly in the programmes using the most modern methods of word processing, especially machine learning.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to work independently with traditional and digital tools and research methods, use advanced software for transcription and research of historical handwriting.
Syllabus
  • Digital codicology and palaeography: paradigm shift, traditional vs. innovative research, medium transformation;
  • Approaches of digital codicology: comparison of texts, databases and catalogues, analysis of external features;
  • Approaches of digital palaeography: the problem of transcription of texts, scribal identity and affinity;
  • State-of-the-art tools in digital codicology and palaeography: multispectral imaging, 3D flattening, AI tools, machine learning and language modelling;
  • Quill, Manuscript Lab, Transcription and PERO projects.
Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars. The teaching takes the form of interactive presentations and practical exercises using the e-learning system (Elf).
Assessment methods
Conditions for the successful completion of the course are participation at the lessons (at least 70%), completion of tasks in the Elf and devising a project in the Transkribus or PERO application.
