Course objectives

The course brings an introduction to the study of Christian missions in the world during the Middle Ages and Early Modern era. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the multifaceted character of missions as activities within specific historical, religious, social and political context; to explain motifs and circumstances of main missionary enterprises; to reflect political and social aspects of missions both in Europe as well as in cultures where evangelization takes place; to explain the results of missions and consider its consequences; to criticaly use missionary reports as sources for further research.

• 0. introductory lecture 1. The pespective of the study of Christian missions, conditions of the spread of Christianity in early period 2. Medieval missions to Asia I - Mongols and Europe, first missionaries (John Plano of Carpini, John of Montecorvino) 3. Medieval missions to Asia II - missions to India, attitude of medieval Christians towards Non- Christians (William of Rubruck, John Marignola, Odoric of Pordenone, Jordanus Catalanus 4. Nestorians in Asia 5. The conquest of America - the problem of "the Other", Christianity in Latin America 6. Portuguese mission in India - Contacts with the Thomas Christians, Jesuits and Mughals, accomodation 7. Christian Missions in China - Matteo Ricci, the Chinese rites controversy. 8. Christian missions in Japan, Francis Xavier. 9. Christian missions in Tibet and Ladakh - Capuchins and Jesuits in Tibet, mission of Moravian Brethren. 10. Protestant missions in India - Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Bartholomeus Ziegenbalg, Alexander Duff and William Carrey. 11. Contemporary missions - papal documents Ad gentes, Nostra Aetate, Evangelii Nuntiandi, the issue of inculturation. 12. Concluding lecture, test.

Kurz je zaměřen na vybrané problémy křesťanských misií s důrazem na mimoevropské misie v době středověku a novověku. Důraz je kladen především na obecné otázky interkulturních kontaktů, které budou řešeny na konkrétních případech.

The course brings an introduction to the study of Christian missions in the world during the Middle Ages and Early Modern era. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the multifaceted character of missions as activities within specific historical, religious, social and political context; to explain motifs and circumstances of main missionary enterprises; to reflect political and social aspects of missions both in Europe as well as in cultures where evangelization takes place; to undestand the problems of usage of missionary reports as sources for research in religious studies.

Medieval missions to Asia - Mongols and Europe, missionaries in India, attitudes toward non-Christians 2. The conquest of America - the problem of "the Other", Christianity in Latin America 3. Portuguese mission in India - accommodation 4. Christian Missions in China - Matteo Ricci, the Chinese rites controversy. 5. Christian missions in Tibet and Ladakh - Capuchins and Jesuits in Tibet, mission of Moravian Brethren. 6. Contemporary missions - papal documents Ad gentes, Nostra Aetate, Evangelii Nuntiandi, the issue of inculturation. 7. Concluding lecture, test. The course brings an introduction to the study of Christian missions in the world during the Middle Ages and Early Modern era. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the multifaceted character of missions as activities within specific historical, religious, social and political context; to explain motifs and circumstances of main missionary enterprises; to reflect political and social aspects of missions both in Europe as well as in cultures where evangelization takes place; to explain the results of missions and consider its consequences; to criticaly use missionary reports as sources for further research.

Medieval missions to Asia I - Mongols and Europe, first missionaries (John Plano of Carpini, John of Montecorvino) 3. Medieval missions to Asia II - missions to India, attitude of medieval Christians towards Non- Christians (William of Rubruck, John Marignola, Odoric of Pordenone, Jordanus Catalanus 4. Nestorians in Asia 5. The conquest of America - the problem of "the Other", Christianity in Latin America 6. Portuguese mission in India - Contacts with the Thomas Christians, Jesuits and Mughals, accomodation 7. Christian Missions in China - Matteo Ricci, the Chinese rites controversy. 8. The course brings an introduction to the study of Christian missions in the world during the Middle Ages and Early Modern era. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the multifaceted character of missions as activities within specific historical, religious, social and political context; to explain motifs and circumstances of main missionary enterprises; to reflect political and social aspects of missions both in Europe as well as in cultures where evangelization takes place; to explain the results of missions and consider its consequences; to criticaly use missionary reports as sources for further research.

Course objectives

The course brings an introduction to the study of Christian missions in the world during the Middle Ages and Early Modern era. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the multifaceted character of missions as activities within specific historical, religious, social and political context; to explain motifs and circumstances of main missionary enterprises; to reflect political and social aspects of missions both in Europe as well as in cultures where evangelization takes place; to explain the results of missions and consider its consequences; to criticaly use missionary reports as sources for further research.

Medieval missions to Asia I - Mongols and Europe, first missionaries (John Plano of Carpini, John of Montecorvino) 3. Medieval missions to Asia II - missions to India, attitude of medieval Christians towards Non- Christians (William of Rubruck, John Marignola, Odoric of Pordenone, Jordanus Catalanus 4. Nestorians in Asia 5. The conquest of America - the problem of "the Other", Christianity in Latin America 6. Portuguese mission in India - Contacts with the Thomas Christians, Jesuits and Mughals, accomodation 7. Christian Missions in China - Matteo Ricci, the Chinese rites controversy. 8. Christian missions in Japan, Francis Xavier. 9. Christian missions in Tibet and Ladakh - Capuchins and Jesuits in Tibet, mission of Moravian Brethren. 10. Protestant missions in India - Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Bartholomeus Ziegenbalg, Alexander Duff and William Carrey. 11. Course objectives

The course brings an introduction to the study of Christian missions in the world during the Middle Ages and Early Modern era. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand the multifaceted character of missions as activities within specific historical, religious, social and political context; to explain motifs and circumstances of main missionary enterprises; to reflect political and social aspects of missions both in Europe as well as in cultures where evangelization takes place; to explain the results of missions and consider its consequences; to criticaly use missionary reports as sources for further research.

Syllabus

• 0. introductory lecture 1. The pespective of the study of Christian missions, conditions of the spread of Christianity in early period 2. Medieval missions to Asia I - Mongols and Europe, first missionaries (John Plano of Carpini, John of Montecorvino) 3. Medieval missions to Asia II - missions to India, attitude of medieval Christians towards Non- Christians (William of Rubruck, John Marignola, Odoric of Pordenone, Jordanus Catalanus 4. Nestorians in Asia 5. The conquest of America - the problem of "the Other", Christianity in Latin America 6. Portuguese mission in India - Contacts with the Thomas Christians, Jesuits and Mughals, accomodation 7. Christian Missions in China - Matteo Ricci, the Chinese rites controversy. 8. Christian missions in Japan, Francis Xavier. 9. Christian missions in Tibet and Ladakh - Capuchins and Jesuits in Tibet, mission of Moravian Brethren. 10. Protestant missions in India - Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Bartholomeus Ziegenbalg, Alexander Duff and William Carrey. 11. Contemporary missions - papal documents Ad gentes, Nostra Aetate, Evangelii Nuntiandi, the issue of inculturation. 12. Concluding lecture, test.

Kurz je zaměřen na vybrané problémy křesťanských misií s důrazem na mimoevropské misie v době středověku a novověku. Důraz je kladen především na obecné otázky interkulturních kontaktů, které budou řešeny na konkrétních případech.

• 1. úvodní hodina, seznámení s tématem 2. perspektivy studia křesťanských misií, koncept křesťanské misie, předpoklady šíření křesťanství v raném období 3. středověké misie do Asie I - orientalismus, Mongolové a Evropa, první misionáři (Jan Plano de Carpini, Jan z Montecorvina) 4. středověké misie do Asie II - misie k Mongolům a do Indie, postoj středověkých křesťanů k jinověrcům (Vilém Rubruk, Jan Marignola, Odorik z Pordenone, Jordanus Katalánský) 5. nestoriánství v Asii - počátky křesťanství v Číně a Indii, vztah katolických misií k nestoriánům 6. dobytí Ameriky - problém "jiného", křesťanství v Latinské Americe 7. portugalské misie v Indii - kontakty s tomášenci, jezuité a Mughalská říše, problém akomodace 8. křesťanské misie v Tibetu a Ladaku - kapucíni a jezuité v Tibetu, misie Moravských bratří, problém překladu a interpretace křesťasnkých textů 9. křesťanské misie v Číně a Japonsku - jezuité v Číně a Japonsku, vztah státu a misií 10. misie v současnosti - teologie a praxe

Součástí každé hodiny bude diskuse nad zadaným textem, který je pro všechny společný a týká se obecného problému. Kromě této pravidelné četby bude povinností každého studenta ústně přednesený referát. Kurz bude uzavřen závěrečným testem.
