Cíle předmětu
The course will explore a series of religious topics relevant to the Christian understanding and refutation of Judaism and Islam throughout the Middle Ages (8th to 15th century). Key case studies drawn from medieval art (cartography, frescos, manuscript illuminations) and religious literature (polemics, apologetics, literary dialogues, letters) will be thoroughly examined. Two main geographical areas will be considered, i.e. Europe and the Near East. By comparing a series of polemical topics drawn from both visual and textual sources, the purpose of the seminar is to trace the role of Judaism and Islam in the making of the Christian worldview in the Middle Ages. It shall be ultimately asked whether and to what extent long-lasting historical phenomena such as anti-Semitism, Xenophobia, Islamophobia and Eurocentrism, are rooted in the medieval Christian understanding of Jews and Muslims. Iconographic sources will be displayed during the seminar. Selected passages from the original sources in Latin and Vernacular will be read and discussed in English translations. The seminar will be taught exclusively in English. As such, students are required to have proper knowledge of English in order to participate. Students will be asked to read relevant secondary literature (usually one item each class) as well as prepare the primary text to be read and discussed as a group.
