Course objectives
Graduate of the course will be oriented in the plenty of various interpretational attitudes toward the work of arts. Thanks to the readings and analyses of specific texts the student will achieve the methodological skills for erudite and contextual interpretation of work of art.
Learning outcomes
Student will be informed about the actual ways of interpretation of work of fine arts and taught how to grasp and interpret it meaningfully.
  • 1. Historical outline of the paradigms in art representation and their influence on the interpretational strategies.
  • 2. Plurality of interpretational attitudes towards works of art.
  • 3. Limits of interpretation.
  • 4. Collision of art history and aesthetics in the interpretation of the “Laocoön” group.
  • 5. Allegoric representation of medieval icons.
  • 6. Perspective as a symbolic form.
  • 7. Velázquez’s play with beholder in front of the “Las Meninas” painting.
  • 8. Manet’s painting anomalies as a foreshadow of modernism.
  • 9. Interpretation of the modern pictures of end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
