Course objectives
This series of lectures shall introduce the fundamental problems and currents in 20-century literary theory, and critically assess individual approaches (methodologies). Particular lectures will be dealing with theory of verse, narratology, and novel theory.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course the students will be able:
- to understand the crucial literary theoretical conceptions of the 20th century;
- the ability to critically analyse and compare particular literary theoretical conceptions and their connections;
- to apply these conceptions to analyses of artistic texts;
- to put the literary theoretical development within a wider, historical and cultural realms.

Teaching methods
Lecture is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an exam which consists of a written and oral part. In order to be examined, the students must have passed the Theory of literature seminars I and II first. During the exam the students have to prove knowledge of main concepts and issues of literary theoretical conceptions of the 20th century. The students are obliged to present their knowledge of eight literary theoretical studies and three monographies (chosen from the list).

Information on completion of the course: Přednáška je vázána na dvousemestrový seminář Teorie literatury I a II. Předmět si zapíší všichni studující bohemistiky; zkouška je povinná, účast na přednášce je nepovinná. Zapsaní posluchači nebohemistických stud. programů zakončí předmět kolokviem.
