Course objectives
The aim of this blended learning course is to give trainees a hands-on introduction to the basic practical aspects of English language teaching. The course is aimed at trainees at the very beginning of their teaching career and designed to prepare them for their internal and external practice teaching in the following semesters. Through a series of six observations (four live at the university language school and 2 video) and six face-to-face sessions, trainees will micro-teach and observe their peers, as well as watch and analyse lessons from a practical view point. Areas to be covered during the semester include various aspects of classroom management such as giving instructions and setting up activities, as well as ways of presenting language and ideas for focusing on pronunciation. Please note that this course is targeted at trainees in their first year of the MA program.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course the trainees will have: - wathced and analysed six lesson observations focusing on various areas of classroom management and language presentation and practice. - identified the key areas of classroom management and partipated in various hands-on tasks in order to develop these in their teaching. - taught, and watched their peers teaching, a 20 minute activity to the class, and been given feedback on their teaching.
  • The course comprises: - Six lesson observations (4 at the univserity langauge school and 2 online) on the language systems and skills, with tasks to structure the observation. These are to be completed in the weeks that we do not meet face-to-face. - Two face-to-face sessions which will focus on classroom management and give the trainees some practice with various aspects of this. - Three face-to-face sessions where the trainees will micro-teach and give one another feedback on their lessons.

Teaching methods
This is a taught (blended learning) course. Six face-to-face sessions plus material delivered online.
Assessment methods
The semester will be assessed on attendance and participation during the course and a submission of a post-lesson evaluation reflection, and observation sheets.
