Course objectives
The seminar will concentrate on the interpretation of the Josef Škvoreckýs prose. We will examine the following works: Zbabělci, Tankový prapor, Příběh inženýra lidských duší, Mirákl, Ze života lepší společnosti. We will then consider his essays and his work as a journalist to complete what he has written in his novels.
Syllabus
  • This course will be divided into the study of several themes. We will focus on the writer himself as a myth breaker. We will examine his references to and his attitude towards history and the issue of the Great History. We will gradually focus on the question of freedom. We will analyze his portrayal of an exiled community and his insights into both American and Canadian culture and society. We will study the main character, Danny Smiřický, as an alter ego of the author. During the seminar we will deal with the issue of faith and religion in a few selected novels. The course will end with the insight of his most recent works, its present status and confront the reactions oh his readers and critics.
