Course objectives

Topics of the seminar change every semester. Modern Greek literary texts are interpreted in the seminar with special attention to their specificity, contextualization within Greek and European literature, influence over later authors.. In the course of the seminar, students learn the principles of literary work with text and at the end of the seminar they are capable of characterising the given period and its authors; interpreting a literary work independently; contextualizing it within the period.

• 3. Surrealism – starting points, European context, acceptance.
• 4. Andreas Embirikos – old and new world.
• 5. Nikos Engonopulos – poet and painter.
• 6. Odysseas Elytis and his surrealist poetry.
• 7. Specificity of Greek surrealism within European context.
• 8. Jorgos Seferis – turning away from Karyotakism, mythology in Modern Greek poetry.
• 9. Jannis Ritsos - Literature and the Left.
• 10. Poets of the 1930s during and after the war.

Teaching methods

The course has a form of a seminar. The seminar will focus on interpretation of chosen literary works. Students will, on the basis of acquired experience and use of secondary literature, interpret literary works. Students will write an essay on a given topic.

Assessment methods

Prerequisites for obtaining credits for the seminar are attendance and work in seminar, homework, an essay and an oral examination
