Cíle předmětu
This course is intended as an introduction to Taiwanese cinema, well-known directors, the central themes and techniques employed in their works. However, the standpoint it adopts is not simply that of film studies. I also use the history of cinema as a pretext for introducing major social and political issues in the island’s recent history reflected in cinematic works: the “228 Incident”, the “White Terror” and the “economic miracle” of the martial law era, national identity and the trend towards Taiwanization initiated during the 1980s and 1990s, the re-writing of national history, ethnic issues, or the tensions of cross-strait relations. It will discuss both art house and commercial cinema, those chapters in Taiwan’s film history which have already been explored by many scholars (such as the New Wave), those forgotten and only recently rediscovered (such as the Taiwanese-language cinema of the 1960s), and the newest cinematic trends.
