Cíle předmětu
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a solid base for their supervised research leading to a successful completion of their PhD theses. The course deals not only with methological issues, particularly in relation to various kinds of discourse analysis, but also with adequate forms of international presentation of research results. Additionally, the course addresses some of the sociolinguistic complexities of doing research at the global semi-periphery.
Výstupy z učení
Students will: 1. understand the differences between various methodological approaches in modern linguistics (qualitative, quantitative, mixed, descriptive, critical, interpretative); 2. understand the specifics of presentation of science; 3. appreciate the challenges faced by non-native speakers publishing in a global language (English) and doing research on the semi-periphery; 4. develop their critical skills by learning how to review scholarly articles (practical analysis); 5. discover the intricacies of communication between authors and journal editors; 6. increase their awareness about the global publication industry and bibliometrics (Scopus, Web of Science, predatory publishing); 7. find out about unethical research practices through case studies; 8. increase their analytical skills by creatively reflecting on compulsory literature.
