Course objectives
Main objectives of the subjects are to explain basic history of Latin America in relation with its social and cultural background and focus on representation of basic historical events in Latin American literature.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to imply and explain the basic historical and literary phenomena and prove their opinions on a concrete text. Student will be able to prove their: • Orientation in the history of Latin America, its periodization, main events and historical figures, understanding the particular characteristics of the history of this region as "periphery of the West" (Octavio Paz). • Knowledge of the prevailing intellectual movements in each historical era. Students will be able to look upon them critically and to reflect them from the current context. • Become familiar with the cultural heterogeneity of Latin America and be able to distinguish, contextualize and interpret the most relevant cultural and artistic manifestations. • Acquire a basic idea of current development.

  • I. History 1.- Main concepts. 2.- America before Columbus. Descovery and conquest. 3.- The colony: government, society. Polemics around the rights of the native Americans. 4.- Culture in the colony: the chronicles. 5.- Culture in the colony II: Baroque era. 6.- The Independency: precedents and development. 7.- XIXth century: civilización y barbarie in the process of creation of the nation States. 8.- Economical developmente and modernity in Latin America. 9.- The Cold War in Latin America: revolutions, dictatorships, imperialism. 10.- Latin America in the globalized world. 11.- Contemporary culture, arts and literature. Teaching methods
Classes. Lectures, seminars. Home study. Regular homewors, written paper, presentation. Reading of primary and secondary bibliography, study of all materials including e-learning.
Assessment methods
Regular submission of assigned tasks. In the case of late submission, 2 points for each task not delivered in time are deducted from the total of 100 points that can be achieved in the final test. Presentation of the selected topic in the lesson (condition for admission to the exam).    Final test: blind map, open questions about the topics covered. Success rate: 70%
