Course objectives
The course comprises revision and practice through written as well as oral exercises (listening exercises, gap-filling exercises, contrastive exercises, etc). By doing these, the ability of students to argue the solutions to particular spelling issues will be examined.
Learning outcomes
The student will deepen their knowledge of the principles of Ukrainian orthography.

  • 1. Principles of Ukrainian spelling; prefix spelling
  • 2. Apostrophe in Ukrainian and loan words
  • 3. Soft sign
  • 4. Simplification of consonants
  • 5. Euphony
  • 6. Alternation of vowels О, Е and І ; Alternation of Е – О after Ж, Ш, Ч, Щ, ДЖ, Й
  • 7. Alternation of vowels in verbs
  • 8. Alternation of consonants
  • 9. Doubling of consonants
  • 10. Particle НЕ + verb
  • 11. Spelling of И – І
  • 12. Capital letters
