Course objectives
Students will master an overview of significant schools of thought, figures, and works of the history of the individual national literatures (Greek, Roman, English, American, German, Scandinavian, French, Russian, and Polish) – from classical antiquity to the Enlightenment (Selective survey of world literature I) and from the Enlightenment to 1945 (Selective survey of world literature II).
Learning outcomes
The newly acquired knowledge will enhance the students’:
- understanding of the significance of world literature for the development of Czech literature in the Central European cultural area;
- will be able to compare the transformation of national literature in relation to literary events and extra-literary impulses;
- apply their knowledge in other literary-history courses;
- will be able to understand the changes of Czech literature in a transnational context.

  • 1. Old Russian Literature in comparative context (prof. Pospíšil).
  • 2. The Golden Age of Russian Literature: Romanticism and Realism (prof. Pospíšil).
  • 3. 19th-century Polish literature – forms of Romanticism a Realism (dr. Buchtová).
  • 4. I-world-word (anthropos-kosmos-logos)- o poetry from Romanticism to Unanimism and Cubism (prof. Kyloušek).
  • 5. I-world-word anthropos-kosmos-logos - on poetry and narrative perspective in Balzak, Stendhal, Alain-Fournier, Proust (prof. Kyloušek).
  • ž. Gothic novel and aesthetic of the macabre; translations from world literature in Odeon publishing house (dr. Koten).
