Course objectives
At the end of the course should be able to:
- understand the problems of modern China since the period of 100 days of Reforms (1898) to the end of the WWII.
- interpret secondary scholarship on modern China history.
- apply Chinese historiographical and cultural terminology.
- identify and discuss the links between historical events and cultural phenomena, and their interpretation in the secondary scholarship.
- identify and interpret history and present situation of the Sino-Czech (international, cultural, military etc.) relations.

  • 1. Introduction, Periodisation of Modern Chinese History
  • 2. 100 Days of Reforms (causes and consequences), Boxer Rebellion, Late Qing reforms
  • 3. Xinhai Revolution 1911 (causes and consequences); Early Republican Period and the Warlords Period (1912-1928)
  • 4. Intellectual Ferment of the Early Republican Period (1912-1921)
  • 5. Stabilisation of Kuomintang and Unification of China; Civil War (1927-1937)
  • 6. Japanese Aggression (1937); Anti-Japanese War; World War II.
  • 7. Civil War (1946-1949); Foundation and stabilisation of the People's Republic of China, Korean War
  • 8. The First 5-year Plan; the Great Leap Forward; Leadership Split at Yan'an
  • 9. The Cultural Revolution
  • 10. The Death of Mao Zedonga and Power Transfer (1976-1978); on the Road to Modernisation (1978-1982)
