- Course objectives
- In the seminar we will focus on the process of language acquisition from several different perspectives. First, main approaches to language acquisition – special nativist and „non-nativist“ will be discussed. Second, attention will be paid to the acquisition processes of language phenomena in the areas of phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicon and syntax. Besides L1 acquisition (mother tongue) we will also deal with L2 acquisition (foreign languages) and pay special attention to bilingualism and other types of „unusual“ language development (acquisition in subjects with hearing and sight impairment, subjects with Down syndrome and Williams syndrome etc.). Furthermore, possible methods of language acquisition research and their contribution to other areas of interest will be discussed. Corpora of child language, i. e. CHILDES, and the possibilities they offer for the child language research will be presented. The aim of the seminar is not only to get acquainted with the process of language acquisition from the psycholinguistic point of view but also to stress the close interconnection of language acquisition with other disciplines dealing with the acquisition of language.
