Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to:
describe main features of the evolution of languages and scripts in the area of Mediterranean from their origins to the testimonies of Greek dialects;
indicate ways of formation and spreading of the writing systems;
enumerate the most important written documents of selected non-Greek languages;
describe the historical background of the formation of the Mycenaean Linear B script;
outline evolution of the classical Greek alphabet and of the Greek dialects from the pre-Classical to the Hellenistic period.
Syllabus
  • Mediterranean linguistic area a) in a broader sense, b) in a narrower sense; Aegean area until 12th century BC; Egyptian and Hittite sources of information about Aegean area;
  • Cretan Hieroglyphs and Linear A script; language of Minoan Cretans.
  • Mycenaean Linear B script, its system and characteristics of Mycenaean Greek, sample texts. Testimonies of ancient authors about non-Greek peoples in Aegean area (Pelasgians, Lelegians).
  • the origins of the Greek alphabet from the Semitic sources and its initial spread in the Aegean and Italo-Sicilian region; symbiosis of Phoenicians and Greeks on Island of Ischia (Gulf of Naples).
  • Non-Greek tribes on the Western and South-Western coast of Asia Minor, their languages and written records (Frygians, Carians, Lydians, Lycians). Written records of non-Greek tribes on Aegean islands.
  • Prehistory and protohistory of Greek language. Differentiation of Greek dialects.
  • Formation of Greek literary dialects. Tendency toward linguistic integration. Various types of koine; hellenistic koine.
