Course objectives
At the end of this course, student will be able to explain basic characteristics of slavic literatures realism. Student will be able to write an essay based on thematic areas and include his/her own author work interpretation. Student is expected to be able to connect individual literatures not only from literary-science standpoint but also from overlap of cultural, societal and socal context.
Syllabus
  • 1. Realism. General definition of concept as scientific, philosophical and literal movement as well as development tendency. Realism as creation method, characteristics, differences with previous epoch, main representatives. 2. Realism in west slavic literatures. Conditions of formation, dating and definition of realism as a movement in Czech, Slovak and Polish literature. Overview of basic characteristics and main representatives. Polish realism or rather positivism? - Focus on Polish realism as a movement, which inclined more to positivism, reason, representatives. Relations between aforementioned literatures, important figures. 3. Realism in east slavic literatures. Conditions of formation, dating and definition of realism as a movement in Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian literature. Overview of basic characteristics and main representatives. Interpretation of most important works, focus on minor literature types in mentioned literatures. 4. Realism in south slavic literatures. Definition of realism on Balkans. Societal, social and national situation on Balkans in 19th century. Main representatives. Common and varied ways of these literatures. Major genres and representatives. 5. Overlap and interpretation of realism. Focus on minor genres of this epoch, e.g. travelogue in Slovak realism prose from Kukučín or Vansová. Female authors in slavic realism, themes, work. Balkans known or unknown?! Authors outside of civilization that aren't well known. 6. Overlap and interpretation of realism. Relations between slavic literatures. Authors, work, genres - common and varied. Turgenev - Vajanský. Kukučín - Gogoľ. Interpretation of most important works of key authors. Norrator category in specific slavic literatures and realism reflection. References to next epoch.
