Cíle předmětu
This course introduces history, politics and international relations of Japan, China and Korea from late 19th century to the present. We will debate major events that defined – and continue to define – the fates of the three nations. Each country will be treated separately, but we will also consider their interrelated histories and forces that forged modernity in East Asia: wars, colonialism, imperialism, nationalism, socialism, Cold War. With this background, we will proceed to discuss some of the region's most vexing problems of today: the China threat, the PRC-Taiwan impasse, the North Korean problem, etc. At the end of this course, students will gain a good understanding of Northeast Asian history and its politics in the last two hundred years. They will also have a much firmer grasp of contemporary issues discussed in media in regards to East Asia. Other than English language competence, there are no prerequisites for this course. It is suitable to students from various disciplines, particularly then to majors in Asian studies, international relations, history or political science.

Metody hodnocení
The course grade will be determined by two exams. A mid-term exam (held in class on October 23rd) and a final exam (TBA: January 2018). Their weights are 35% and 65% respectively. The format of these exams will be multiple choice with one correct answer. Students will be tested on the material covered in lectures as well as on the readings of additional texts. The final grading scale is as follows: A 100% -90% B 89% - 80% C 79 - 75% D 74% - 70% E 69% - 65% F 64% - 0% Missing an exam can be excused only with a certified doctor's note. Lecture attendance is recommended but not required.
