Sound knowledge of Latin grammar and reading knowledge of Classical Latin and possibly basic knowledge of Vulgar Latin.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide Latinists with a reasonably comprehensive introduction to the problem of African Latin as a regional variety. During the course, the linguistic peculiarities of African Latin will be outlined according to metalinguistic evidences (grammarians, literary authors etc.) and epigraphic sources (mainly inscriptions), the latter with the help of the Computerized Historical Linguistic Database of the Latin Inscriptions of the Imperial Age (http://lldb.elte.hu/).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, student will be able to:
outline main features of vowels and case system in African Latin;
identify these features in selected inscriptions.

  • 1. 1.Introduction; The problem of African Latin according to the metalinguistic evidences; 2. Phonological changes in African Latin as evidenced in inscriptions; 3. Apart from regular attendance course requirements will include preparation of one homework to be submitted by email to adamik.bela@btk.elte.hu after the course until the subsequent monday (the topic of the homework will be defined later on).
