Course objectives
The objective of this course is to compare the ideas of game developers about the Late Middle Ages with the views from historical science. Based on an analysis of the game Kingdom Come: Deliverance, students will learn about the differences in both these approaches. With regard to the game being set in a historical and local context, the course will contain individual thematic blocks examining events at the turn of the 14th/15th century in the Czech lands, and various aspects of life in Late Medieval society. There will also be a focus on issues of historical memory and the survival of stereotypes about the past, as well as the use of historical material for presenting ideological attitudes.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- differentiate the approaches and objectives of the game developer and the historian in their use of historical material;
- characterize life in Late Medieval society in the Czech lands;
- understand the basic literature and the sources for the Late Middle Ages in the Czech lands;
- discuss the use of historical material today and its (mis)use in social discourse.
